Accessibility In The Library

Accessible Services Overview

Our libraries have a range of services to ensure our resources are accessible for everyone.

  • 1:1 Welcome Tours - We offer a one-to-one welcome, bespoke tour of your campus library (Colchester, Loughton or Southend), available with a referral from the Student Wellbeing & Inclusivity Service (SWIS). For more information, see our welcome tours overview page.

  • Alternative Formats - We can help to provide library materials in an alternative format if you have a print-impairment, available with a referral from the Student Wellbeing & Inclusivity Service (SWIS). For more information, see our pages on our alternative formats service.

  • Assistive Equipment - We offer a range of equipment in our libraries to help make them more accessible. See our page on equipment for more information on what is available at each campus.

  • Shelf retrieval (Colchester/Loughton) - If you are registered with the Student Wellbeing & Inclusivity Service (SWIS), you can request books that you'd like to collect through the library website. Simply search for the book you need in the search bar on our homepage, then click on the Request button under 'Get it'. You will be notified when these are available to collect from the hold shelf (Colchester) or Helpdesk (Loughton).

  • Click and Collect (Southend) - A click and collect service is available to Southend library users, who can request books online or by phone for collection.

  • Proxy borrower - For those students whose disability may prevent them coming to the library easily, arrangements can be made for books to be collected and borrowed on their behalf by a friend or colleague. Please contact libline@essex.ac.uk if you would like to nominate someone to do this for you.

  • Scan and Deliver (items at Colchester only) - Our Scan & Deliver service enables you to request a single book chapter, journal article, or set of pages (up to 5%) to be scanned and set to you via email.

  • Book a Librarian - All students can book an appointment with a librarian to get support with things like finding information and data on a topic, advice on using databases or online resources, and how to cite/reference.
