Information on Booking a Study Space in the library

Albert Sloman Library Colchester

Study Spaces are available for pre-booking in the following areas:

Ground Floor - Library Reading Room (individual quiet study), LRR Training Room (individual silent study), Postgraduate Room (individual quiet study).

First Floor - Student Collection  (individual quiet study).

Second Floor - North and South wing (both individual quiet study).

There are a mixture of spaces available, such as spaces with a PC or just with power. We recommend checking the info button before confirming your study space booking, to ensure it meets your needs - you will find further information about the space and a photo.

Once you arrive at the library, you must sit at the space you have booked. If you are not sure where your space is located please ask a member of library staff who will be happy to direct you to your seat. If you are seated in a space which you have not booked, library staff will ask you to move and will again help you find the correct space.

You can borrow a laptop from our Laptop Loans service on the ground floor for use in your study space.

If you would like to browse the shelves on floors 1 or 2, you will need to book a study space on the floor you wish to browse (between 30 minutes or 4 hours). You will be able to browse the collection on the floor you are on, but will not be able to move between floors. If you would like to borrow any of the books, these will need to be issued at the self service machines on the ground floor, before leaving.  When not browsing you should be at your allocated seat.

To help with choosing a floor for browsing, see below:

Floor 1 - Student Collection  - A range of classmarks, usually items which appear on your reading list.

Floor 2 (North) contains classmarks R, S-V, TK, TX  - Health Sciences, Medicine, Nursing, Technology, Military Science, Electronics, Hotel Management.

It is not possible to access floors 3, 4 and 5 at the current time. If you would like books from these floors, please use our Click and Collect service

Please remember to keep personal belongings with you at all times and do not leave belongings unattended at study spaces.
