News and Media

The Library's collection of newspapers is modest, but does include some important Latin American titles (also a good collection from the former Soviet Union). These are mostly held in store - please check the catalogue for details or ask your liaison librarian

Investigates the digital divide globally

Box of Broadcasts (BoB)
Access to TV and radio broadcasts from UK channels, including an archive back to 2007 for some key channels. Recordings of older programmes can be requested through the TRILT service.

BoB also enables the compilation of playlists, like the one from University of Huddersfield, on Black Lives Matter, as part of its "Broaden my Bookshelf" project

The Conversation - Decolonisation
Really interesting articles, written by academics (mostly from outside Europe & N. America) in a journalistic style, that cover many different aspects of Decolonisation

Includes links to news digitisation projects around the world, some of which offer free access to newspaper content

Nexis
NEXIS contains news sources from countries around the globe, including foreign language news, so it might be a useful resource if you are looking for alternative voices to the predominant Western media.

The Market Insights section also gives limited access to BBC Monitoring, which produces English summaries of news and broadcasts from around the world, notably the Middle East, North Africa, Turkey and Iran.

Rand daily mail
The Rand Daily Mail, a Johannesburg daily, is a critically important title that pioneered popular journalism in South Africa. It is renowned today for being the first newspaper to openly oppose apartheid and contribute to its downfall. Search news articles from 1902-1985.

In addition to YouTube and Box of Broadcasts (see above), we also have access to:

Academic Video Online - video material with curricular relevance, such as documentaries, interviews, performances, news programs and newsreels
Kanopy, a streaming service offering a wide range of films and documentaries

Both platforms include many films & videos of potential interest for broadening & diversifying reading list content.

British Film Institute offers access to quite a diverse range of free content through BFI Player, including Black Britain on Film and other documentary collections representing Chinese, Jewish and South Asian communities in the UK
