These levels will translate differently depending on area of study and research needs.

Please refer to the recommended learning pathways below to help you get started. If you would like support adapting these learning pathways to your curriculum, please contact your Liaison Librarian.

Learning pathway for undergraduates

We recommend a minimum of two embedded information literacy sessions for undergraduate students combined with independent study. Before starting any major assignments or their dissertation, students should be working at advanced-level information skills.

Type of training Learning outcomes When to offer
First embedded session: 'Intro to the Library' induction

Develop beginner skills: This includes basic skills required to use the Library and access course-related information.

First year, at the start of course. This session is recommended for all students in their first year of study at Essex.

Embedded exercises:

Independent study: Information Skills self-enrol modules and open workshops

Develop intermediate skills: Students should be able to understand their information needs and how to meet them.

First and second year

Second embedded session: select from our workshop menu or discuss alternatives with your Academic Librarian. Develop advanced skills: Students should be able to confidently reference reliable sources of information to support their arguments. Start of third year - in preparation for major assignments, independent research projects, or dissertations.

Learning pathway for postgraduates

Postgraduates should be confident in advanced-level information literacy skills at the start of their course, but they may need to address some knowledge gaps. We recommend one intervention for postgraduate students.
