A contractor has now been appointed to carry out the refurbishment work.
We expect them to start later this week or early next week.
Watch this space for further updates!
Phase 1 is complete. All of the shelves have now been removed from the floor - see how spacious it looks!
The north wing lift is back in use as normal.
The group study room on floor 2 will remain in use as a temporary book shelving location for the rest of the project.
The Library will be closed this weekend 6-7 July for electrical enabling works to take place.
Floor 2 remains closed and we expect contractors on site in the next couple of weeks to start the next phase.
All of the books have now been cleared from the shelves, and the shelves themselves are in the process of being dismantled.
The area is closed off and shelves are being dismantled until 28 June.
The group study room on floor 2 is in use as a temporary book shelving location.
The lift in the north wing is currently out of action to Library users until 28 June whilst books and shelves are being moved. There may be some disruption on floor 2 of the north wing during this time and it may be advisable to work elsewhere in the Library during this period.
If you've been around the library recently, you may have seen all the moving and shaking on floor 2. We've been busy moving books and getting the space ready to be transformed. We've got a way to go, but wanted to show you some of the work that's been going on in the last week. We moved nearly 50,000 books so far, about 1/3 of the total number on the shelves. Don't forget you can still get hold of them using the store request form, or find them in the floor 2 group study room.
This summer we will be refurbishing Floor 2 of the south wing (original 1960s part of the Library building).
We've been aware for some time that the original wing of the building is looking old and tired, and doesn't provide the quality of study environment found elsewhere in the Library. We hope that the refurbishment of Floor 2 will be the start of a phased programme to bring improvements to all floors of the south wing.
The refurbishment will include:
See "Your Space" for more information on the planned layout, as well as ways in which our users have already contributed to shaping the space and how you can share your views on what the refurbished area should be like as the project continues.
We anticipate that the work will be completed some time in November, with an official reopening of the floor in January 2020.
Books and journals from this area will remain accessible on request throughout the refurbishment, although there may be some delays until 28 June due to books being in transit.
Help and further information
If you need any help while the refurbishment is taking place, please talk to a member of Library staff at the Helpdesk or around the building.
Updates will be provided as the project progresses.
