The end of term is approaching, and so is the finish line for the floor 2 refurbishment! Lighting and carpets have been updated, shelving improved, and furniture installed. Now it’s almost time for the new PCs to be brought in. We can hardly wait for the floor to reopen in January – it will be something to look forward to after the winter break. Stay tuned for more details about the relaunch of floor 2! In the meantime, enjoy this preview of the new desks and study spaces.
All the major changes to floor 2 are now complete, and it’s time to start returning shelving and books to their *new* old home. If you look up at the second floor from outside the Library, you might catch a sneak peek of the shelving going back in!
The Library’s two lifts have been working overtime transporting thousands of books from storage back up to floor 2. Please be aware that whilst books are in transit from 18 - 29 Nov, there might be delays in requesting books held in storage. It normally takes 24 hours to fulfil these requests, but it may take slightly longer than usual depending on our access to the floor whilst work is carried out.
The next step will be moving in the new furniture! Our special delivery of furniture will arrive on 29 Nov, and will be installed over the following week. Please be aware that the main lift will be unavailable between 7am and 9am on 29 Nov so that the furniture can be moved up to the second floor.
Access to the main lift will be limited until refurbishment work is complete, so please take a look at alternative access routes to find out how to navigate the building without using a lift. If you have accessibility needs, please speak to staff at the Helpdesk. We can help with retrieving books if needed.
The floor 2 project reached an exciting milestone last week with the installation of new carpets! We also officially placed the furniture order after consulting students on which chairs and desks they preferred.
Here's a progress photo of the new carpets being installed.
Soon the floor will be ready for shelving and books! Below is a map of what the new carpeting layout on floor 2 will look like. The triangular blocks down the centre will be a new study space with desks, and the grey surrounding area will be shelving.
It was a close race between these two lounge chairs, but the chair with the table eventually won the popular vote. Thank you to everyone who gave feedback on the furniture samples!
We are now at the point of preparing to order furniture for floor 2, and we need your help!
Come along to the Library Fair on Tues 15 October 11-3 to try out some possible chairs and desks and let us know what you think.
The furniture samples will be out at one of the stalls on the ground floor of the Library, along with some visualisations of what the floor will look like once the project is complete.
Following our power shutdown last Saturday, our contractors are now working on the electrics on floor 2, so that we can ensure power is available to every desk.
As we progress swiftly through August, we’re sure people are eager for updates on the second-floor refurbishment. As some of you will have noticed, contractors are back on the scene tearing up the old carpets (hurrah!), removing all the old tables and chairs and replacing the blinds. Below is a panoramic view of floor 2 with some of the old furnishings remaining, it may be the last view we have of the old floor layout!
In addition, the colour of the new carpet tiles has been chosen. We’ve opted for a mix of sophisticated dark pink, navy and dark grey (“Sakura”, “Inkpot” and “Yari”, for those carpet connoisseurs) which will provide a bit of colour to the floor whilst (hopefully—spillage test coming soon!) remaining encouragingly resistant to stains. These colours beat out worthy contenders “Lantern” (orange) and “Arashi” (light grey), all pictured below for your reference. We eagerly look forward to seeing how work progresses, and opening the new and improved floor 2 when everything is completed.
We had a lot of books to move, but we did it.
Now the contractors are now here and working on the floor and getting it ready. Sorry for any of the noise, we promise it will be worth it!
A contractor has now been appointed to carry out the refurbishment work.
We expect them to start later this week or early next week.
Watch this space for further updates!
Phase 1 is complete. All of the shelves have now been removed from the floor - see how spacious it looks!
The north wing lift is back in use as normal.
The group study room on floor 2 will remain in use as a temporary book shelving location for the rest of the project.
The Library will be closed this weekend 6-7 July for electrical enabling works to take place.
Floor 2 remains closed and we expect contractors on site in the next couple of weeks to start the next phase.
All of the books have now been cleared from the shelves, and the shelves themselves are in the process of being dismantled.
The area is closed off and shelves are being dismantled until 28 June.
The group study room on floor 2 is in use as a temporary book shelving location.
The lift in the north wing is currently out of action to Library users until 28 June whilst books and shelves are being moved. There may be some disruption on floor 2 of the north wing during this time and it may be advisable to work elsewhere in the Library during this period.
If you've been around the library recently, you may have seen all the moving and shaking on floor 2. We've been busy moving books and getting the space ready to be transformed. We've got a way to go, but wanted to show you some of the work that's been going on in the last week. We moved nearly 50,000 books so far, about 1/3 of the total number on the shelves. Don't forget you can still get hold of them using the store request form, or find them in the floor 2 group study room.
